ABOUT

Brisbane Astronomical Society has been supporting amateur astronomy across South-East Queensland since 1990.  Our members are located across the region from the Darling Downs and Granite Belt, to metropolitan Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and hinterland.

We conduct telescope events most months of the year for our members, plus additional events open to the public.  We also meet on-line via Discord app, to share astronomy news and discuss all thing astronomical and learn from each other.

Members-only telescope evenings are conducted at the Maleny Observatory (Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club), Brisbane (Calvert) and Warwick.  See the Calendar of BAS Member Events on our website for specific details.  The BAS Facebook Page primarily provides weather updates on these events.

Public stargazing events are conducted from April to November on a Saturday evening close to a new Moon and continue on as member only events after public stargazing is completed.

The term ‘Maleny Observatory’ recognizes our official recognition by the peak Australian astronomical body as an educational facility of excellence, and this status was awarded in 2019.

No astronomical knowledge or equipment is necessary. Only curiosity. We love to share our scopes and expertise, and encourage people not to purchase telescopes till they have spent time with us finding out where their interests lie, and what will be the best equipment to suit their needs.

We have experts in both visual stargazing and astrophotography to guide you in exploring the night sky.
