Sunshine Coast Council leased 6.397 ha of the Maleny Community Precinct to Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club in 2015. Called Maleny Sports Park, it is zoned for sport and community purposes. As the only remaining council-owned flat ground zoned for sport in the district, MDSRC is tasked with developing it under council guidance for active sport and recreational activities for the future needs of our growing community.

Maleny Sports Park is the home of MDSRC, shares a boundary with the Maleny Golf Club and is also adjacent to Barung Landcare’s leased area, where an Environmental Education Centre and Nursery is currently being built. The multi-use clubhouse is HQ to the MDSRC and is also shared by many local organisations for their meetings, fund-raisers, AGM’s conventions, classes and more.

Since 2015 the staged development on Maleny Sports Park has been undertaken by MDSRC, with the following stages successfully completed:

  • construction of a large shared clubhouse, that also houses the Beersheba Living Museum where the 5th Light Horse Regiment have their Regimental HQ and display artifacts to tell stories about their regimental history
  • creation of a sub-lease to the Maleny Contract Bridge Club upon which they have constructed a clubhouse and playing rooms
  • construction of the ‘Ziza Field’ fenced training grounds for the 5th Light Horse Regiment, available to the public except when horse training is underway
  • development of “Maleny Settlers Green” adjacent to the “Ziza Field”. Maleny Settlers Green is a community project collaboration between MDSRC, Maleny’s service organisations Rotary, Lions, RSL and Apex,  Maleny Commerce, Friends of Pattemore House, Maleny Garden Club and the Maleny Cultural and Historical Society.
  • construction of an all-weather car-park with disabled drop off zone and turning bay

Further development is to come, with exciting plans on the board for Maleny Sports Park. In late 2018, Sunshine Coast Council unanimously approved Maleny Sports Park as the site for the future Maleny Indoor Aquatic Centre. The Maleny Hydrotherapy Centre and the Maleny Community Gym are planning for new facilities to be built, adjacent to the new Aquatic Centre on Maleny Sports Park. Multi-use exercise and playing fields will complete the outdoor exercise areas for these facilities for all to enjoy. More news about these developments will be available as they progress and funding is secured.

Meanwhile, volunteers maintain Maleny Sports Park and Maleny Settlers Green to a high standard, with the public now able to enjoy these new facilities.
